Wrote this one in Bulgaria in 2008 while I was a Peace Corps Volunteer but it applies even more today to the current political situations. More division than I have every seen. Where is the leadership? No where to be found. Not the best sound quality.

We’ve got to preserve our health.
It is all for ourself.
People are running scared.
Just like they haven’t cared.

Some turn to the booze.
This isn’t what I choose.
Which is the way?
Certainly there’s a new day.

Chorus

We’re all in survival mode.
We carry big load.
We’re all in survival mode.
We carry big load.

Arguments and tempers flare.
This I don’t wish to bear.
There’s no point to this.
Better avoid and miss.

We live within our cave.
Wishing only to save.
Our egos cause problems.
With pride we wear our emblems.

Chorus

We’re all in survival mode.
We carry big load.
We’re all in survival mode.
We carry big load.

We make shady deals.
so we can eat our meals.
We keep up the front.
In our power hunt.

Have faith in one another.
We’re brother and sister.
Fight through the pain.
We’re all the same.

Wrote lyrics back in 2007 on a train from Sofia to Pernik, Bulgaria. Just now putting music to it. It’s obviously psychedelic. It is raw but I think it’s good. The guitar is a 330 Rickenbacker. I used a vox amp. Keyboard is casio wk-500 and recorded on a Tascam digital 8-track machine.

Tune in to the Higher Frequency.
Go there and you will see.
No more blindness, only clarity.
Pass thru the fog to prosperity.

Confusion and doubt are left behind.
Live for the now in the mind.
Keep to the narrow path ahead.
These things have all been said.

Chorus
Higher Frequency 3x

Break

Keep close to the Higher Frequency.
It’s here that you will be free.
Never again listen to the static.
This is so hard for to kick.

The Higher Frequency will empower
You from within inside.
In due season and time you will tell.
Like you discover the wishing well.

Chorus
Higher Frequency 3X

chords for verse: Bm G A G# G F#
chorus is D Dsus

It took me 7 years to get back to Los Angeles. I felt robbed how I left so abruptly. Literally, I was robbed. And so I am back. Maybe more this time for closure and to take up where I left off but in a different direction. Back in 1999-2003, I was actively pursuing music. I was in a few groups around town and the scene was fantastic. The Beachwood Sparks, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Quarter After, the Tyde, Wiskey Biscuit, the Warlocks, smallstone, the Belle Isle, the Snakes. I was there and the scene still influences me today.

I found these lyrics that I wrote on January 15, 2002. I remember recording a song to the lyrics but I don’t know where the tapes are. It’s probably in storage somewhere. But here it is:

Just wanna be right.
Just wanna be fine.
Something will come in time.
Getting there is not so easy.

Just wanna move weight.
Just wanna stand straight.
Something will give to flight.
Getting there is not so easy.

Just wanna break through.
Just wanna be free.
Something will give to might.
Getting there is not so easy.

Just wanna be real.
Just wanna have sight.
Something will show real bright.
Getting there is not so easy.

I think at the time I must have felt that I had something else to do in life but wasn’t so sure. There is so much confusion and distraction in the world sometimes.  I often told my brother over the phone that I felt like I was just twisting in the wind in L.A.  I had made a go of it.  It was a little over a year after I wrote this song that my world was turned upside down. You can read about what happened here: Run Out of Town

A lot has happened since January 2002. I went back to Texas, worked there for while, lived with my grandparents taking care of them. This was a bit hellish at times. I put my life on hold for a few years. Then I applied to the Peace Corps. I was accepted and went overseas for 2 1/2 years in Bulgaria. I met my wife there.   She is still there.  Damn, Homeland Security.

I’ve put out 5 albums on the internet for free, been interviewed live on the Bulgarian Radio and more things.  And I’ve kept up with writing and recording my music.  It is a new age in music.  In 2003, it was starting to happen with putting online music out but now it is booming and I’m not talking about illegal pirated music. The point is, there is no excuse why your music shouldn’t be heard.  Do-it-yourself all the way.  No need to wait on record companies or anyone like that.  Just do it.  I also lived in Portland, Oregon for about six months but I couldn’t hang with the rain.

In 2010, I got married and came back to California and now I am attending the Fuller Theological Seminary Theology and Arts program. So you can see, I still have strong beliefs that music and the Arts can make the world a better place. In 2003, I almost thought that my music was over and that I was down and out for good.  Not so.  I’m a bit more grounded this time but still have the California Dreamin’ vibe.

So please, if you are reading this and think you are down and out, you are not.  It is just a season.

Back in late September 2009 I wrote a song called “Rise Up America” and recorded it after seeing all the chaos go down at the G20 summit in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. I made a call for anyone who wanted to record this song to do so and to even change the words to their own country so that it is more personal.

It’s been a little while now but we’ve now got another version and from Italy. 🙂

Here are the two songs for Italy and America together:

Download the Italian version here for free:

Here is my original song with video from the G20 Summit:

I recently got an email from an Italian artist simply known as Alex or “d0ct0r” who heard my song and wanted very much to record it and make his own version for Italy. He sent it to me and this is what you are listening to. I like it very much.

Now that Italy is involved with the spirit behind the original song, my call still goes out for others to get involved. It’s up to us to take our world back from fear and destruction. We must rise above fear and anxiety!

Let’s keep this song chain going. It is important to get the spirit of optimism out. Thanks Alex!

Pounding the pavement.
Practicing in a tent.
Keeping it real.
What’s the deal?

America’s not the same.
It seems more and more lame.
I’m not giving in.
It makes my head spin.

Where’s the change?
It must be in me.
No one else will change.
I’m listening to La Grange.

No one’s gonna rescue us.
Should we just fuss and cuss?
No, better pound the pavement.
I got my shovel ready.

All you do is spout.
That’s what you’re about.
You tear people down.
Inside you wear a frown.

You’ve got something to say.
You’ve never had your way.
People have trash talked you.
You just want to get your due.

Trash talker, open your mind.
Don’t punch the rewind
To your memories of pain.

You ain’t the “Lone Ranger.”
To me not a stranger.
Our heads are all a bloody mess.
Dwell on the crap a little less.

Say yes instead of no.
See if you can grow.
Who really attacks you?
Maybe it is just you.

Trash talker, open your mind.
Don’t punch the rewind
To your memories of pain.

Listen to the song here:

I will not be conned into believing
There is no hope.
I will not be conned into believing
There is not a good person left.
I will not be conned into believing
That racism is the root cause.

I will not be conned into believing
There is no God.
I will not be conned into believing
All men are scoundrels.
I will not be conned into believing.
All women are sluts.

Get up now.
It’s alright.
Get up now.
It’s alright.

I will not be conned into believing.
There is no answer.
I will not be conned into believing.
There is nothing we can do.
I will not be conned into believing.
There is not purpose in life.

I will not be conned into believing
There’s only hope in the government.
I will not be conned into believing.
America is not a Christian nation.
I will not be conned into believing.
Rush Limbaugh is our answer.

Get up now.
It’s alright.
Get up now.
It’s alright.

I will not be conned into believing.
Chris Matthews is our answer.
I will not be conned into believing.
Sean Hannity is our answer.
I will not be conned into believing.
Socialism is the way to change.

I will not be conned into believing
That the Republicans are right.
I will not be conned into believing.
That the Democrats are right.
I will not be conned into believing.
That we know everything about 9-11.

Get up now.
It’s alright.
Get up now.
It’s alright.

I will not be conned into believing.
That Obama is a big peacemaker.
I will not be conned into believing
That political correctness is the best.
I will not be conned into believing
That pills will improve our lives.

I will not be conned into believing
That our time heals all wounds.
I will not be conned into believing.
That we don’t know what to do.
I will not be conned into believing
That we’re not okay.

Get up now.
It’s alright.
Get up now.
It’s alright.

I got four other verses
Can you sing? but you get my point.
You gotta keep on going.
You gotta get off your butt.

You’re buried underneath the America Dream.
You got no time for nothing.
Sit at your cubicle for hours and hours.
Don’t forget about your paper towers.

Pick up the phone and talk to people you don’t like.
What’s it all for? You wish you could take a hike.
No, you gotta pay off your credit cards.
And listen to all the flippin’ retards.

Go back home and you’re tired.
So you drink some coffee and get wired.
And you get in a rage
Cause you had a terrible day.

Turn on the tube for the brainwashing.
They tell ya how to feel and it really stings.
Pop open the beer let your head fill with fear.
That leads to absolutely nothing to hear

Do it all over again the next day.
Keep on in the monotonous robotic way.
When will you say, “Is it all worth this?”
Probably only after you sink to the abyss.

Go back home and you’re tired.
So you drink some coffee and get wired.
And you get in a rage
Cause you had a terrible day.

Improvised this lo-fi psychedelic song last night and someone’s phone rang but I kept it going like we should keep America going. America, wake up from your sleep! Download the song and pass around or RE-RECORD yourself.

Share alike. If you’re from another country besides the U.S. please insert your own country in the lyric instead and record it. We really need to work together. This Global Government thing is a bit off.

Words:

Rise up America.
Rise Up.

Rise Up America.
Rise.

Rise Up America.
Rise.
Rise Up America.
Rise.

phone goes off

Rise Up America.
Rise.
Rise Up America.
Rise.

Rise Up America.
Rise.

Rise Up America.
Rise.

Rise Up America.
Rise.
Rise Up America.
Rise.
